Ink and Op Art

Today we did some exploration with ink.

From Visually.

We've been exploring fonts and practicing our own.  Calligraphy and modern calligraphy are fun ways to explore.  Here's a video introducing dipping pens:



We'll try those out next week.

We used Dr. Ph. Martin's India Ink in the primary colors -- red, yellow, and blue.  These three colors are the basis of other colors.  Color Theory helps us in our artistic endeavors.

We dropped the different primary colors of India Ink onto the paper and blew them around with a coffee stirrer straw.

We're going to finish up some of our Inkblot Art next week.  Rorschach a Swiss Psychologist who used ink blots as a psychological assessment -- The  Rorschach Test.  Andy Worhol a prolific artist of the 20th Century used ink blots to create art, but it was something he got mixed up on.

We also practiced doing some Op Art,  We created Op Art Hands

There are lots of other ways to do it.  Practice it and work on your hand project at home.

Assignments:

1. Please finish up your op art hand and create one more work.
2. Bring in some graphic art -- cereal boxes, etc.
3. Bring your favorite book/comic to share.
4. Make sure to bring back your sketchbook with the ink blots.

Assignments

1. Continue to explore folk art (even the music!)
2. How would you illustrate your favorite song lyrics or quote?  
3. Continue to observe fonts and lettering around you -- find your favorite one that is on cereal box or a food box you can cut.  Cut it out and bring it in to share with the class.  We will be using it for our art project next week.  
4. If you forgot your book this week, please bring it next week.  And see if you can identify the type of medium that was used.  
5. Choose your favorite Disney animated movie.  Be ready to share it with the class.
6. Choose a cartoon and bring it in to class
7. Have fun creating!  I love seeing your creations and your work!!!

Overview of Today

Creativity Activity

I drew this simple line and half circle on the board and asked the students to come up with a list of as many things as they could.  Some ideas the students had were: half a watermelon;  a cat looking over a fence; planet; sunrise; sunset; rock; fishing rod; bow and arrow.  After doing this in class all I could do this afternoon was keep seeing things that it could have been -- a bush on a curb; a cat paw reaching onto a table; half of an earphone....  It was a fun way to see how our brains work and how having others can help us be creative.

Please make sure to bring your materials back to class.  

Here is a photo of the book I recommend for the class.  The paper is thick enough for the projects that we'll be doing.

Materials: Blue Construction Paper, various lengths of jute and sisal string, glue, sponge paintbrush, pencil

Instructions: Investigate lines with these materials.  Please don't cut the string.  

I'll post some photos of the work next week.
